The Union Hook and Ladder Company #1, situated at Fire Headquarters at 44 William Street in the City of Tonawanda, New York, and joined with National Hose Company #1 is the oldest Volunteer Fire Company in this city. Joined by Delaware Hose Company #2 and Niagara Hose Company #3 who are located on Wheeler and Morgan Streets, is the oldest of the 4 Volunteer Companies in Tonawanda.
This city has a combination Volunteer/Professional where the professional company runs 24-7 out of headquarters. The volunteers run all fire and still alarm calls that sound in the city. As far as fines goes for fires, this company does not fine people for missing fires or fire schools.
Our service to the community has been shown by our dedication to our company, and the City of Tonawanda itself for many years fighting fires such as Jake's Junk Yard Fire of 1975, and, Jeness' Twin Ton Fire of 1977 which destroyed a full city block and we stood by in many out side houses when general alarm fires occurred else where. We were there for the fire in North Tonawanda that destroyed 2 businesses and saved the Historic Rivera Theater on Webster Street, and were there for the Murphy's Fire which was also on Webster Street both in their business section of the city.
Every year we are helping associations connected with the City of Tonawanda such as the Explorer's Club, which are young individuals who have a desire to join the fire companies of our city. As a company, we have also donated to worthwhile causes that were brought to our attention. The Union Hook and Ladder also is associated with the South Western, the Western, and the New York State Fireman's Conventions.
Each year we have been proud to associate ourselves with the Canal Fest operating a booth serving the citizens who crowd the Canal Fest each year and using this money to fund whatever the company enterprises may be during the year. Each year we also have a Reunion Dinner to honor our members with awards, to honor those fallen, and to install our new officers of the coming year.
